Bad Brains would grow to become arguably the most influential band in all of hardcore. The DC natives found themselves subject to a ban in all of their local venues so in late 1979, they moved to New York. They are frequently cited with bringing the hardcore scene to the city. The Bad Brains played louder and faster than every one of their contemporaries. Once word began to spread of their existence and people saw their shows,the hardcore scene exploded on the Lower East Side. Max’s Kansas City became famous for hosting acts like the Velvet Underground, Patti Smith, Television, Suicide, and the whole downtown punk scene of the mid-1970s, but it also was the venue for an early gig by Bad Brains, the legends of DC hardcore and one of the creators of the genre. The original location of Max’s Kansas City was on Park Avenue South and 18th St. It closed in 1981. Bad Brains were the headliner on the final night
